Green Building

The Potter League is planning an environment-ally friendly, green building. A green building designed in an ecological and resource-efficient manner is a thoughtful choice for an animal welfare organization.

Our new structure will make efficient use of energy, water, and other resources reducing the impact on the environment. Management of storm water through a vegetated roof and cistern system, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, and use of recycled materials are examples of sustainable design planned for our project. Green buildings are of higher quality, last longer, and cost less to operate while creating healthier surroundings for the occupants. The Potter League has registered this project with the US Green Building Council for certification under the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) program.

The Potter League believes in modeling desired behaviors to make a difference in the lives of animals - all dogs and cats are sterilized prior to adoption, our cats wear identification tags, and obedience training is humane based. In an organization where compassion lives, The Potter League also believes we should be influential leaders to encourage green values and the wise stewardship of our natural resources.

The New Facility

Our architects, ARQ, have designed a building that allows The Potter League to overcome several challenges that have detracted from our effectiveness as an animal welfare facility. ARQ is best known for their work at the San Francisco SPCA and the ASPCA in New York City. This small Maine-based firm brings a New England influence to their design and is renowned for pioneering innovative solutions for animal care.

Animal shelter construction presents a unique series of challenges. Our new building is designed to control disease, keep animal housing areas hygienic with durable and germ-resistant materials, and provide housing that promotes good behavior in an environment that is stimulating and enriching for the animals.

The creation of a new facility will enhance the mission of The Potter League by:

  • Supporting the health, safety, and well-being of shelter animals
  • Increasing the successful placement of unwanted animals into new homes
  • Expanding programming to decrease neglect, abandonment, and cruelty
  • Enhancing the human/animal bond

The new building will provide opportunities to:

  • Showcase adoptable animals in inviting areas with viewing and get acquainted spaces
  • Encourage volunteer involvement by providing ample space to safely interact with animals
  • Adopt the “best practices” of our industry and create a model shelter which sets high standards for animal care and programming
  • Expand innovative programs to assist at-risk animals, educate children, and properly instruct dog obedience training

And we will build it green. Our building is registered as a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) project with the US Green Building Council. Elements of a green building include emphasis on sustainable site planning, water and energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, use of environmentally friendly building materials, and a quality indoor environment.

The Potter League’s recognized ability to serve the animals is attributed to the intense efforts of its well-trained staff, dedicated volunteers, and loyal donors. What The Potter League seriously lacks is a physical plant that will support, rather than hinder, our services and programs.
