Shelter and Staff to the Rescue

Just about five weeks ago, the Potter League received 48 cats, a turtle, a snake and a dog from one household when their owner’s home was declared uninhabitable. This sudden influx of animals put a strain on our resources in more ways than one. Our staff, volunteers and supporters all chipped in to meet this challenge.
Many of the cats were ill with upper respiratory illness and conjunctivitis. Fortunately, we were able to isolate all the cats in our medical wellness unit on the second floor. The design of our building allowed complete segregation so there was no exposure to contagious disease to the cats already in the building.
After several weeks in our care, the health of the cats has greatly improved. We are now readying them for adoption and all will be spayed and neutered before being placed. We are also grateful to the RI SPCA and several other shelters who assisted us by accepting some of the cats and placing them in new homes.
The level of cooperation between the Newport Police, Newport Animal Control and the other shelters is a testament to everyone’s desire to do what is best for the animals. And thank you to all who contributed food, equipment and donations to help us care for the 51 animals. All totaled, we will easily incur over $5,000 in expenses.
