This time of year, having a place to call “Home” holds special significance.  That is why our staff and volunteers work so hard to place all our adoptable animals during the month of December.  We would love to have each and everyone in a home this holiday season.

Currently, we have upwards of forty dogs, cats and small animals available for adoption.  Among them are several senior cats who have been at the shelter for a while.

One of those cats is Dusty, an eight year-old white cat with beautiful black markings.  Dusty has been at the shelter since last May when her owner had to enter a nursing home.  Our volunteers describe Dusty as a cat who loves to cuddle and play with feather toys. She’s sweet and friendly.  Dusty has been waiting patiently for a home and for someone who wants a lap cat.
Treat, Snickers, Gracie and Bailey are also waiting.  And here are some reasons that adopting an older cat is just great:

  • With an adult cat you have a better idea of their personality. A mellow adult cat in the shelter is likely to stay that way in a home, where a kitten may be much more  high strung. An adult who likes to be held or sit on laps will stay that way, whereas a kitten may grow from a cuddly baby into an independent adult.
  • Kittens are extremely playful by nature and can be very destructive. They generally need much more monitoring than adult cats require. An adult cat will enjoy a play session followed by a nice nap!
  • Adult cats can save you money! An adult cat is usually sterilized and up to date on all vaccinations when adopted. Kittens will generally require more services soon after adoption so costs can add up quickly.
  • Adult cats have a more well developed immune system so the stress of moving into a new home is significantly less likely to cause illness than in a kitten.
  • Adult cats often seem to know that they’ve been given a second chance at a happy life when they are adopted, and many people feel that this causes them to be more appreciative, and loving, and will forge a deeper bond with their owners.

To help get more animals “Home for the Holidays, we are offering a special senior adoption rate of $60 to the adopters of Dusty, Treat, Snickers, Gracie and Bailey.
