The Potter League for Animals serves as the housing facility for the animal control departments of Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. Strays found by concerned citizens, police officers and animal control officers are brought to the Potter League.

So you're still missing your pet

• To fill out an online report, go back to the above search for either cat, dog or other type of animal, scroll to the botton and click on "register your lost pet".
  Click here to  print a printer friendly version of our lost report and call us with the information or fax the report to us. The Potter League keeps a computerized listing of all animal reported missing for 30 days from the date reported to us. We regularly check this list against incoming animals. It is, however, highly recommended that those who are missing their pets visit the shelter in person. Descriptions of animals can vary greatly and animals are sometimes found a great distance from where they were originally reported missing.

1. Contact your local animal control officer or police department:
2. Post flyers (preferably with a clear, color photo) of the animal around your neighborhood and in local businesses. Mail the flyer to the offices of local veterinarians. Include a description of the pet, date of disappearance and a phone number or numbers to call. It is advisable not to offer a reward.
3. Make a point of showing the flyer to your local mail carrier, newspaper delivery person and children who you know in the neighborhood. Ask them to keep an eye out for your pet.
4. Walk the neighborhood regularly checking any possible places where your pet could have become trapped - like a shed, garage or barn. If there is a beach or pond nearby, check out those areas as well.
5. Run a lost advertisement in the local newspaper. Once again, it is not advisable to offer a reward.
6. Check with animal shelters outside of this area, especially if you have a dog or cat who may be considered a neighborhood nuisance. Neighbors have been known to take these animals for a ride.
7. If your cat is missing, especially an indoor cat who has never been outside, call their names outside your front door several times during the day and night.
8. Don't give up; keep checking in with your local animal shelter and animal control officer.
