Potter Pet University May Program -
Common Illnesses in Senior Pets

The Potter League is pleased to announce the Potter Pet University May Program on the subject of Common Illnesses in Senior Pets presented by Dr. Gary O’Neal, DVM of Portsmouth Veterinary Clinic.

As our pets age, certain illnesses seem to target them. If your dog or cat is getting up there in years, come to this informative program with Dr. O’Neal, as he acquaints the audience with sign and symptoms of common illnesses in senior pets as well as ways to help prevent problems. Bring your questions as there will be time for discussion.

Rooster, a twelve year old Jack Russell terrier came to us recently from our sister shelter in North Carolina as part of the Potter League’s Fetching Friends program. His 96 year-old owner had to surrender him to the Mitchell County Animal Rescue League.

Susan, a friend of a spry, 90 year-old couple who live on an island off the coast of Maine, found information about Rooster on our website. The couple, Lewis and Ida, had charged Susan who lives in Rhode Island with finding the perfect dog for them.

Our staff worked with all the parties involved to ensure that this would be the right placement for Rooster. We received this recent e-mail from Susan whose husband drove Rooster to his new home: “Just a quick update to let you know that Rooster has just been delivered to his wonderful home on a beautiful island off the coast of Maine thanks to my husband's willingness to do the 10 hour round trip drive! When they got off the ferry, Rooster jumped right into Lewis's car and sat in the driver's seat!”

Patricia Bean, the director of Mitchell County Animal Rescue League was kept informed of the adoption and wrote: “This brings tears to my eyes and heart. Rooster is such a character and it seems he has found the same type of owner……. Please keep us posted on Rooster and thanks so much for saving him. He didn't have a chance for adoption here.”

Fetching Friends is a life-saving program for hundreds of animals who wind up in high volume/low-adoption shelters. Thanks to the hard work of the staff and volunteers at Mitchell County Animal Rescue League and the Potter League, we will soon be celebrating the transport of animal number one thousand from North Carolina.

The Potter League would also like to acknowledge the work of the staff and volunteers from other organizations, especially the Pennsylvania SPCA, who work with the Potter League’s Fetching Friends program.

Lewis, by the way, runs the local historical society museum on the island where he resides in Maine. He and his wife are looking forward to giving Rooster all the love and care he needs.
