Advocacy

Our Vision for the Future

The Potter League for Animals is committed to Zero Tolerance for animal suffering and homelessness.  As the heart of a humane community, we will lead an empowered citizenry who are the animals’ best advocates.  Together we will act with courage and compassion to address the root causes of animal abuse and overpopulation.  We will create a place where animals are afforded justice and the same right as ourselves to inhabit this land and to live with dignity.

A team of staff and volunteers wrote our vision statement in 1998.  The intent was to illuminate rather than limit and give direction rather than destination to our work to reduce cruelty and neglect to animals.  While the day to day work of caring for and placing homeless animals consumes a great deal of our staff’s time and energy, The Potter League does not want to lose sight of the larger issues that affect animals.

Of particular concern are the following issues:

  • Wildlife Problems – incidents are increasing as more and more natural habitat is developed and there are few resources to help solve the problems.
  • Coyotes - this issue, in particular, evokes a range of emotions among community members
  • The Cycle of Violence – the violent perpetrator affects the whole family including pets.  The Potter League believes in working with other social service agencies to reduce the incidences of abuse that result in injury, suffering and even death to woman, children and companion animals.
  • Legislation – The Potter League has been instrumental in the passage of several Rhode Island laws, which have helped further our mission to help homeless animals. We will continue to support the passage of well-written legislation that benefits animals.
