Our Facility

Our FacilityThe Potter League opened the state-of-the-art animal care facility in 2008. This building was the first animal shelter in the country and the first building in Rhode Island to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified by the US Green Building Council.

The shelter features a large air conditioned room for obedience classes, common playing areas, soundproof and hospital quality ventilation in animal rooms, a 15,000-gallon cistern to capture runoff water to use for cleaning as well as recycled building materials. One of the biggest components in our environmentally friendly facility is the rooftop garden. This vegetated roof captures rainwater to prevent pollution in the nearby wetlands.  Recycled materials are used throughout the shelter from plastic wainscoting made of soda bottles and a rubber floor made from old tires.  Stop by to visit our shelter and see not only our animals looking for homes but our amazing building as well.

Constructing a building with a social conscience fit into our mission of making a difference and enriching lives of both people and animals.
